Leo Messi wins 2011 Ballon d'Or

by Al 10. January 2012 06:36

We are delighted to congratulate Icon Leo Messi on winning his third consecutive Ballon d'Or award. The 24-year-old Barcelona and Argentina superstar beat team-mate Xavi and Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo to land the prestigious title of world's best player.

After legends Marco van Basten, Michel Platini and Johan Cruyff, Messi becomes the fourth player to win the award three times. And at such a young age, he is perfectly placed to smash the record set by his predeccesors in years to come.

Messi played the starring role in Barcelona's Champions League triumph last season, and was named man of the match in the final against Manchester United. He also won the Primera División with Barcelona, as well as the the UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup and Spanish Super Cup.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Brazil legend Pele and UEFA president Michel Platini were among a host of leading football figures to lavish praise on Messi at the awards ceremony in Zurich.

At Icons we have enjoyed an excellent relationship with Leo, having conducted our first signing with him when he was just 18. We met up with him for our sixth signing session together in December 2011. You can see our full range of signed Messi products here.

We are also proud to say that six of the FIFA 2011 World XI are on the Icons roster. Iker Casillas; Xabi Alonso; Andres Iniesta; Wayne Rooney; Cristiano Ronaldo; Leo Messi - the world's best six-a-side team?!

The rest of the World XI is made up of Sergio Ramos; Gerard Pique; Dani Alves; Nemanja Vidic and Xavi. We are working on adding more of those names to our list, so sign up to our newsletter and follow us on Twitter for the latest news!

Messi leads Icons named on Ballon d'Or shortlist

by Al 1. November 2011 08:28

We are delighted to see our Icons making up nine of the 23-man shortlist for the prestigious Ballon d'Or. Barcelona and Argentina's Leo Messi is the overwhelming favourite, and will match Michel Platini's record of three consecutive Ballon d'Ors if he is triumphant. Last year there were five Icons on the shortlist. This year we have grown. Let us know who you would like to see next on the site by getting in touch on Twitter or Facebook.

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is the only Englishman to have been nominated, and is one of only five players connected to the Premier League on the shortlist. Of those five, Manchester City's Sergio Aguero only played half of 2011 in England, while ex-Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas now plays for Barcelona. In Spain, Barcelona lead the way with an incredible eight nominees, while rivals Real Madrid boast five.

Which Icon will be crowned World Player of the Year? Here is the complete shortlist:

Eric Abidal (France), Barcelona

Five of the Best: Penalties

by Al 31. October 2011 11:10

Penalties are next up in our 'Five of the Best' series. From the World Cup final to Swiss football's 12th tier, this collection of spot kicks has something for everyone. What are your favourite penalties? Get in touch and let us know on Twitter or Facebook.

Zinedine Zidane

This is the kind of sublime skill and audacity for which France legend Zinedine Zidane will always be remembered. At 0-0 in the 2006 World Cup final against Italy, the stage could hardly have been bigger. Zidane's final professional game was subsequently marred by his notorious sending off and France's eventual defeat, but with this wonderful penalty he became only the fourth player in World Cup history to score in two different finals. He was named the best player of the competition and awarded the Golden Ball. It was only a shame he couldn't lift the World Cup at the end of it all.

Ezequiel Calvente

The perfect 'switch-hit' penalty here from Spain Under-19s' Ezequiel Calvente at the 2010 European Championship in France. Shaping to hit the ball with his right foot, the Real Betis midfielder shifts to his left at the last second to send the keeper the wrong way. He might not have tried it had Spain not been 2-0 at the time, but we're very glad he did.

Joonas Jokinen

Former Finnish youth international Joonas Jokinen became an internet phenomenon when he executed a spectacular somersault as he smashed home a penalty for Swiss side FC Baar in April. An amateur outfit who play in the 12th tier of Swiss football, Baar were hosting rivals FC Sempach in a local derby, and what's more, it was 0-0 when this penalty was taken. We salute you, Joonas.

Joe Hart

This is not the first of our 'Five of the Best' series in which Joe Hart has featured (see the fifth video here). Indeed, the Manchester City and England stopper appears to be a man of many talents. Here he is stepping up for England Under-21s in the penalty shootout of their 2009 European Championship semi-final against Sweden. High and powerful into the roof of the net, he looks as comfortable taking penalties as he does facing them.

Xabi Alonso

An absolutely perfect penalty from Spain's Xabi Alonso in a friendly against Argentina in 2009. For the best view of this one watch the replay at 0.57 seconds.

...Oh, what the hell. Here's one more:

Forward(-thinking) Friday: Arsenal's new number eight, Mikel Arteta

by Al 2. September 2011 05:17

Although not a 'forward' per se, Arsenal's new number eight Mikel Arteta is this week's pick for Forward Friday.

The departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively left a creative void in Arsenal's midfield. A £10m transfer deadline day signing from Everton, Icon signee Arteta is the man charged with sparking the Gunner's back to life, and filling the sizeable boots left by his Catalan compatriot.

The 29-year-old, from the Basque city of San Sebastián in Spain, made over 200 appearances for Everton over the course of seven seasons. Few Premier League players have matched the consistency of the stylish Spanish playmaker, and he arrives at Arsenal with the pedigree and experience to help the Gunners put a turbulent summer and nightmare start to the season behind them.

Like Real Madrid's Xabi Alonso, Arteta came through the respected Antiguoko youth academy in the Basque Country. While his close friend Alonso would eventually sign his first professional contract with Real Sociedad, a 15-year-old Arteta was snapped up by Barcelona.

He was a regular for Barcelona B, but was unable to make the step up to the first team due to fierce competition for places, and in 2000 he was sent for the first of two seasons on loan at French side Paris Saint-Germain. Arteta's performances in a deep-lying central midfield role behind a young Ronaldinho in the 2001/02 season provoked interest from a host of clubs around Europe, and in 2002 he signed for Walter Smith's Rangers for a fee of £5.8m.

In his first season in Glasgow, Arteta helped Rangers to a domestic treble of the Scottish Premier League, Scottish Cup and League Cup, and was named their young player of the year. A regular for the Spanish under-21 side, he seemed destined to break his way into the senior Spain side. His second season with Rangers was blighted by injury, however, and in 2004 he made a return to La Liga with Real Sociedad, where he hoped to be reunited with old friend Xabi Alonso. Alonso left the club for Liverpool, however, and after a disappointing season with Sociedad, Arteta jumped at the chance to follow him to Merseyside with David Moyes' Everton.

Arteta moved in next to Alonso in January 2005, initially joining Everton on loan. In July, however, he completed a permanent £2m transfer and signed a five-year deal. It didn't take him long to acclimatize to life at Everton, and in his first half season he featured regularly as Everton ensured Champions League qualification with an excellent fourth-placed finish.

Between 2005 and 2007 Arteta was among the Premier League's standout performers, winning Everton's Player of the Season award in consecutive seasons. Moyes' decision to push Arteta further forward to the right-side of midfield had proved an inspired one. With an excellent eye for a pass and formidable set-piece delivery, he was the Toffees' creative hub, contributing goals and assists in equal measure. His intelligent and technical approach is perfectly suited to the Gunners' style of play, and Arsenal fans are rightly optimistic about the impact he can have in North London.

Spain's midfield options are so outstanding and varied that despite his obvious guile and talent, Arteta has yet to win a call-up to the national side. With the opportunity to showcase his ability at Champions League level with Arsenal, however, that could be about to change.

We at Icons conducted our latest signing with Mikel on 11th September 2008:

If all goes to plan for the Spanish maestro, we will be quick to arrange another signing session with him, this time in red and white.
